Miniart 1/35 M3 Lee Late Production
The M3 Lee, officially Medium Tank M3, was an American tank used during WWII. In Britain, the tank was called by two names based upon the turret configeration and crew size. Tanks employing U.S. pattern turrets were called 'Lee' while varients using British pattern turrets were called 'Grant'.
Design commenced in July 1940 and the first M3's were operational in late 1941. The design was a compromise between the U.S.'s requirement for a medium tank armed with a 75mm gun and the U.K's demand for 3,650 medium tanks.
Of the 6,258 M3 varients manufactured, 2,855 were officially handed over to the British government.
The M3 Grant first saw action with the Royal Armoured Corps in Morth Africa during May 1942, however most of the M3's ordered by the U.K. became surplus to requirements. 1,700 were transferred toi the Australian Army for defence and training duties, The British Indian Army received 900 and 1,386 were exported directly to the Soviet Union.
The M3 was withdrawn from most theatres as soon as the M4 Sherman became available in larger numbers.
